Should you replace both springs
Most garage doors use a pair of springs. When one breaks, the other has made the same number of trips and is usually close behind. Replacing both at once saves you another service call, keeps the door balanced and extends the life of the whole system.

Questions we hear
Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
Please don't. Garage door springs store enough energy to cause serious injury, and winding or unwinding them takes the right tools and training. Leave the door closed and call the office.
How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
A loud bang from the garage is the classic sign. On a torsion system you'll often see a gap in the coil above the door. The door may feel extremely heavy, rise only a few inches or the opener may strain and stop.
Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?
It's best not to. Without the spring the door is carrying its full weight, which can burn out the opener, snap a cable or let the door drop. If the car is inside, call us before trying anything.
What's the difference between torsion and extension springs?
Torsion springs mount on a shaft above the door and twist to lift it. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. Both do the same job of counterbalancing the door's weight, and both are dangerous to handle.
Do garage door springs break more often in cold weather?
Springs wear out with use, but cold adds stress because the steel stiffens and the door is harder to move. A spring near the end of its life often gives out on a cold morning. A fall tune-up can catch a worn spring before winter.
How much does it cost to replace a garage door spring?

Should extension springs have safety cables?
Yes. A safety cable runs through the center of each extension spring and is anchored at both ends, so if a spring breaks it stays contained instead of whipping loose. If your extension springs don't have them, we can add them.
