Around Glen Arbor
Glen Lake cottages inside the National Lakeshore
Glen Arbor is a small village inside Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, set between Sleeping Bear Bay on Lake Michigan and Glen Lake, with the Crystal River winding through town. Sand and wind are part of life here. Fine sand works into door tracks and rollers, and a door that grinds or sticks may only need cleaning, lubrication and new rollers.
Big Glen and Little Glen are lined with cottages and lake homes, and many of them are summer places closed up from fall to late spring. Garage doors on those properties go months without moving, which is when a spring can break without anyone noticing and seals dry out and crack.
Year-round residents deal with Lake Michigan wind and lake-effect snow on roads like M-22 and M-109. A well-sealed door and a balanced, tuned-up opener make winter mornings a lot easier.
