Around Kalkaska
Rural homes, pole barns and snow-country shops
Kalkaska is the county seat and the only incorporated village in Kalkaska County, sitting where US-131 and M-72 cross. It hosts the National Trout Festival every spring, and the upper Boardman River and the Manistee River both wind through the surrounding county.
Housing around Kalkaska leans rural: homes on acreage, cabins in the woods, and a lot of pole barns and shops. Snowmobile and ORV trails run through the county, so plenty of garages here hold sleds, trailers and machines as well as cars. That makes pole barn and oversize doors as important here as house doors.
Far from the milder air along Lake Michigan and the bay, winter in Kalkaska is long, cold and snowy. Cold stiffens rollers and seals, drifts pack against doors, and a door that is frozen down should never be forced with the opener. Keep the bottom seal in good shape and get a tune-up done before the snow flies.
